The Historic Places Intitiative

I have prepared over 100 reports for the Historic Places Initiative, a National program documenting Canada's Municipal, Provincial and Federal Heritage Sites.

Special Places

Special Places Projects were developed by the Historic Resources Branch as a method of creating Community Inventories of Heritage Resources and subjecting the sites to an analysis process that will help communties protect and use their heritage resources  to best advantage. I piloted the first projects in 5 communities in 2008. As of  2011 I have produced Special Places Projects for 14  Urban and Rural Communities in Manitoba.

Pivotal Events

Pivotal Events Projects aims to identify and explore the main themes in a community's history and produce an illustrated Time Line that will help communities recognize, explore, celebrate and promote the heritage assets that every community has. We have completed such projects in Rivers / Daly, and Hartney.

Learning Products

Here our aim is to identify resouces that will assist museums and schools in their efforts to present enhanced local history programming. The result is a binder with a collection of maps, photos, documents along with suggestions for use. The project is a link between the school system, the local museum, and the heritage projects a community has completed.

Heritage Websites

Heritage Website Projects provide universal accessibilty for the materials generated by our Heritage Projects, and provide a platform from which we can extend and enhance the work already done.

Heritage Districts

As consultant to the The Virden Heritage District Project I have completed the research and analysis of the buildings in Virden's proposed Heritage District and produced the Heritage Values Statements and related documents required for the first stage of the designation process. Virden will be the  the second Manitoba town to designate a Local Heritage District. See news reports.
